A steady check engine light means the car logged a fault and wants it looked at. A flashing one means a misfire is actively happening and raw fuel is reaching the converter—that one is worth pulling over for, because a $200 repair turns into a converter.
We read the codes, then test what the code points at. Most check-engine work at our shop is a misfire, an EVAP or vacuum leak, or a sensor circuit—and each is confirmed a different way before we quote it.
Typical timeline: Most check-engine diagnoses are same-day by appointment. Emissions monitors may need a drive cycle to complete after the repair, which can add a day.

What we offer
Code retrieval with real context
Stored and pending codes plus freeze-frame data showing the conditions when the fault set—which is usually more useful than the code number.
Misfire diagnosis
We isolate the cylinder, then separate spark, fuel delivery, and compression using live data and mechanical testing rather than replacing all the coils.
EVAP & vacuum leak testing
Smoke testing finds the cracked hose, failed purge valve, or loose seal behind an EVAP light or a lean running condition.
Emissions-related follow-up
If a check-engine fault is what stands between you and a passing test, we address the underlying issue and let the monitors complete.
What the light is actually telling you
The most common causes we see are unglamorous: a small vacuum or EVAP leak, an ignition-side misfire, or a sensor reading out of range because of a wiring or ground problem rather than a bad sensor. Loose gas caps really do set EVAP codes. So do cracked hoses you cannot see without smoke.
Clearing the code is not a repair—it just deletes the evidence and resets the monitors, which also means an emissions test cannot complete until they run again. We would rather find the cause once.

If it is steady and the vehicle drives normally, usually yes—but get it looked at. If it is flashing, stop driving it. A flashing light means an active misfire that can damage the catalytic converter within a short drive.
We would rather not. Clearing it hides the fault and resets the emissions monitors, so if you need to pass a test you now have to drive it long enough for them to run again. If the cause is fixed, the light goes out on its own.
Usually because the sensor was reporting a real condition accurately. A lean code, for example, is often a leak—we smoke test before replacing anything.
